Laptop Plugged In but Not Charging? Windows and MacBook Checks

If your Windows laptop or MacBook says it is plugged in but the battery is not charging, do not assume the battery has failed. The adapter, cable, charging port, power-management settings, temperature or battery condition can all play a part. These checks help narrow down the problem before buying a replacement charger or booking a repair.

If you rely on your laptop for university, work or everyday use in Selly Oak and Birmingham, start with the external power supply and move to software checks only if it is safe to do so.

1. Check the power adapter, cable and socket

Try a different wall socket and inspect the charger and cable for visible damage, fraying or bent connectors. If you have a known-good compatible charger with the correct power rating and connector, test it. USB-C charging does not mean every USB-C adapter provides enough power for every laptop.

2. Read the charging message

Windows may show that the laptop is plugged in but not charging, while some manufacturers provide a battery-health or charging-limit utility. On a MacBook, check the battery status in the menu bar or System Settings. A charge limit or battery optimisation feature can intentionally pause charging below 100%, so check your model's settings before assuming there is a fault.

3. Let the laptop return to a normal temperature

Very hot or very cold conditions can affect charging behaviour. Shut down demanding tasks, place the laptop on a hard surface with its vents unobstructed and let it return to room temperature. If the laptop or battery is swollen, smells unusual or becomes dangerously hot, stop using it and seek professional advice; do not press, puncture or attempt to remove a swollen battery.

The image above illustrates the plugged-in-but-not-charging situation. Note whether the laptop charges when switched off, whether the battery percentage changes, and whether the message appears with more than one compatible adapter.

4. Try a normal restart and check updates

Save your work and restart the laptop. Install routine operating-system and manufacturer updates when the laptop has reliable power and you have a backup of important files. Avoid random driver-download sites or firmware updates while the laptop's power is unstable.

5. Inspect the charging port without probing it

Look for obvious lint, looseness, bent pins or damage, but do not insert metal tools or liquids into the port. If the plug only works at an angle, disconnect it rather than repeatedly wiggling the connector, as this can worsen port damage.

Windows laptop checks

  • Open Settings and check the battery status and any manufacturer power-management utility.

  • If available, review the manufacturer's battery diagnostic and health report for warnings.

  • If charging stopped after an update, note the update date and exact message instead of reinstalling drivers indiscriminately.

MacBook checks

  • Confirm the adapter and cable are suitable for your MacBook model and that the connection is secure.

  • Look in Battery settings for charging optimisation or a charge limit that may explain a pause.

  • If using USB-C, try another supported port if your model has one, and note whether the behaviour changes.

When does it need professional assessment?

Seek an assessment if the laptop never charges with a known-good compatible adapter, the port is loose or damaged, the battery percentage drops while connected, or diagnostics report a battery fault. A battery, port, charger or internal charging circuit can produce similar symptoms, so the exact cause should be checked before ordering parts.

Quick answers

Why is my laptop plugged in but not charging? Common causes include charging limits, adapter or cable problems, heat, port damage or battery wear. Should I leave it plugged in overnight to test? Do not use overnight charging as a diagnostic test if the device or charger behaves abnormally. Will a new battery always fix it? No—the fault may be in the charger, port or charging circuitry.
