iPhone or iPad Not Charging? Common Causes and How to Check Safely
Is your iPhone, Samsung or Android phone not charging, charging only when the cable is held at a certain angle, or showing a charging warning? The cause might be the adapter, cable, charging port, battery or a software setting. A few safe checks can help narrow it down before you buy parts or arrange a repair.
These checks also apply to many cellular iPads and Android tablets, although the exact charging connector and settings depend on the model.
1. Test the charger and cable first
Try a different wall socket and check the cable and adapter for fraying, bent connectors, scorching or looseness. If possible, use a known-good compatible charger with an appropriate power rating. A cable that fits the connector is not necessarily capable of delivering the power every device needs.
2. Check the charging port gently
With the device disconnected and powered off where practical, look for visible debris or damage at the port. Do not insert metal tools, scrape the contacts or pour liquid into the connector. If the plug feels loose or charging works only when the cable is angled, stop repeatedly moving it; a damaged port can become worse.
3. Notice any liquid or temperature warning
If a liquid-detection warning appears, disconnect the cable and follow the device maker's instructions. Do not force wired charging, use a hairdryer or put the device in rice. Let the connector dry in a ventilated place and seek help if the warning persists or liquid exposure was significant. If a device is unusually hot, disconnect power and allow it to cool naturally.

The image above shows the kind of charging setup to inspect. Avoid trying several unknown chargers or forcing a connector into place. Note which cable and adapter were used and whether wireless charging, if supported, behaves differently.
4. Restart and check the battery indicator
If there are no warning signs and the phone has enough charge to operate safely, restart it and reconnect the charger. Check whether the battery percentage changes after a little while. Some devices charge slowly when in use, very warm or almost completely depleted; however, repeated charging interruptions deserve further investigation.
5. Is it the phone, iPad or charger?
If another compatible charger works normally, the original adapter or cable may be the issue.
If multiple known-good chargers fail but the same charger works with another device, the phone or tablet may need assessment.
If charging starts and stops when the connector moves, the cable or port may be damaged.
If the device shows swelling, unusual heat, a burning smell or liquid damage, stop charging and seek professional advice.
What about an iPad that will not charge?
Check the adapter's power rating, cable condition and charging port, and give a deeply discharged device some time with a suitable charger. A Wi-Fi-only or cellular iPad may behave differently by model and connector, so use the correct cable and adapter. Do not assume an iPad battery needs replacing based only on one failed charging attempt.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my phone only charge at an angle? A worn cable or loose/damaged port is possible; avoid wiggling it repeatedly. Can a charging port be cleaned at home? Only remove obvious loose external debris if it can be done safely without probing contacts; otherwise arrange an assessment. Does not charging always mean the battery is faulty? No. The charger, cable, port or charging circuit can cause similar symptoms.
