Dropped Your Phone or iPad in Water? What to Do Immediately
If your phone or iPad has just been splashed, dropped in a sink or exposed to a drink, the first few decisions matter. Even if the device still works, liquid may have reached internal components. Avoid rushing to charge it or repeatedly turning it on to see whether it has recovered.
What should I do first after a phone gets wet?
If it is safe to do so, disconnect the charger and accessories. Power the device off if you can do so without repeated attempts. Gently wipe the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth and leave it in a dry, ventilated place. Do not shake it aggressively or use heat to try to dry it.
Should I charge it to check whether it still works?
No. Do not connect a charger while moisture may remain inside the device or its charging port. Applying power to wet electronics can make damage worse. If a moisture warning appears, follow the device maker's guidance and wait until it is safe to reconnect power.
Does putting a phone in rice help?
Rice is not a reliable way to remove moisture from inside a phone or tablet. Small particles may also enter openings. The safer approach is to disconnect power, dry the exterior gently and seek advice if liquid may have entered the device.
What if the screen still works after getting wet?
A working screen does not guarantee that the inside is dry. Problems such as charging faults, speaker or microphone issues, display changes or unexpected shutdowns may appear later. If the device was submerged or a significant amount of liquid entered it, arrange an assessment rather than relying on the fact that it currently switches on.
Can water-damaged phones and iPads be repaired?
Sometimes, but the outcome depends on the type of liquid, how much entered, how long the device remained powered and which components were affected. No repair outcome can be guaranteed before inspection. Keep the device disconnected and describe what happened when arranging help.
